BRIEF HISTORY OF THE EDO STATE INDEPENDENT ELECTORAL COMMISSION:


The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission was created by the provision of section 197, sub-section 1 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

 On inauguration by the then Executive Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Chief Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion, on the 24th March, 2000, the Commission had its pioneer members as follows:

 i) Hon. Justice G.O.U. Okungbowa                                 Chairman

 iii) Hon. Chief (Mrs.) C. Ewohime                                           "

 iv) Hon. E.K.O. Omorere (JP)                                                   "

 v) Hon. P.A. Igbinovia                                                                "

 vi) Hon. G.O. Ogbebor                                                                "

 vii) Hon. Saliu Jeremiah                                                           "

The Commission carried out its first statutory function by successfully conducting the Local Government Elections in Edo State on the 27th of March, 2004. The elected Council officials successfully completed their tenure.

5. With the expiration of the tenure of the first set of members of the Commission in June, 2005, a new set of members were appointed and inaugurated by the then Executive Governor of Edo State, His Excellency Chief Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion on 12th July, 2005. The names of the members of the Commission were as follows:

This set of members were removed from office by a resolution of the Edo State House of Assembly on 19th July, 2007 and a new one appointed which was also removed by a resolution of the Edo State House of Assembly on October, 6th 2010.

Consequent upon the dissolution of the Commission, new members were appointed and inaugurated by the State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole on October 6th 2010. The reconstituted members of the Commission are as follows:
