EDO STATE COUNCIL FOR ARTS AND CULTURE (EDSCAC)


 

BACKGROUND


The Edo State Council for Arts and Culture emerged from Bendel Arts Council after the creation of Edo and Delta States on the 21st August, 1991. The Council was established by Edict NO.1 of 1973, subsequently amended in 1978 and 1986 by Edict NO.14 and 21 respectively. It has perpetual succession and power to sue and be sued and also to acquire, hold and dispose of land.


Functions and Powers
The Council was set up to render social services through:
(a) Dissemination of the rich cultural heritage of the State. The Council is to among other things:

  Promote and propagate the arts and culture of the State. (ii) Present and exhibit the art works of Edo State.
  Preserve and document the historical and traditional relics of Edo Art and Culture.
  To this effect, the Council organises festivals, lectures, symposia, research and publications.
Departments in the Parastatal:


Administration and Supply.
Performing Arts.
Visual Arts.
Research and Documentation.

(a) Administration and Finance Division: is responsible for the day-to-day management and co-ordination of the Council operations and other divisions respectively. The Administration Division therefore takes care of the finance and accounts, the maintenance and supply units of the Council.
(b) The Performing Arts Division:-
(i) Takes care of the State Performing Troupe, the technical support and the costume and make-up units in their production of traditional creative music, dance and drama shows. This division has produced musical CDs, tapes and stage dance dramas

(c). The Visual Arts Division:- is responsible for the Council workshop which takes care of the production of arts and craft such as textile, sculpture and hand woven works. This division is also responsible for organisation of exhibitions, the production and maintenance of city beautification with sculptural pieces including those in Local Government Council Headquarters and State boundaries.


(d) The Research and Documentation:- This division has been responsible for the publication of the rested monthly Ivie Magazine from its research activities. The division has equally had extension services at every Local Government Area Offices promoting the activities and tapping the talents of upcoming artistes at the local level.
The Public Relations Branch


This is responsible for the marketing of the Council's activities, creation of its public goodwill, organising media events and providing information to tourists and other stakeholders. The Department also provides information published in the Edo State Bulletin and web site.
