Not fewer than 13 professional female clubs plying their trade in Nigeria are expected to compete for honors in the second edition of the Betsy Obaseki Female Football Tournament billed to commence on Wednesday, September 7th, 2022.
Briefing Newsmen after inspecting the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, venue for the opening and closing ceremonies of the football fiesta, the vision bearer of the tournament and wife of the Governor, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, said all is set for the event as everything pertaining to the successful hosting of the competition has been perfected.
Giving the prize money for the overall champion at the tournament to be N5 million, the First Lady noted that the focus of the maiden edition was “Human Trafficking” while that of this year is going to be centered on ” Drug Abuse” in Nigeria.
She further stated that besides playing football, all the razzmatazz of showbiz will be showcased by some selected secondary school students in the state, adding that her desire is to have a competition that is better than the previous edition even though the first edition was equally unique.
Addressing the issue of sponsorship, Mrs. Obaseki reiterated that some notable individuals, organizations and some sport loving Nigerians have shown interest in the sponsorship of the tournament.
On whether the tournament would continue after leaving office, the First Lady however hinted that the annual event has been institutionalized and has come to stay.
She assured that nothing shall by any means halt its continuity, stressing that the structures that have been put on ground for the yearly female football fiesta would sustain it in the years to come.
