… begins vaccination in 18 LGAs
Edo State has recorded 10 new cases and 20 recoveries from coronavirus (COVID-19), as the government begins the rollout of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines across the 18 local councils of the state, as part of intensified efforts to protect the people against the deadly virus.
The State COVID-19 Incident Manager, Dr. Andrew Obi, disclosed this during the daily virtual meeting of the State COVID-19 Taskforce, chaired by the state governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki.
Obi noted that the state is currently recording a steady rise in recoveries and decline in case positivity and fatality rates, adding that the vaccination will further ensure that Edo people are protected from the virus.
He said, “Edo State, in the last 24 hours, recorded 10 new cases of COVID-19, 20 more recoveries and no death. The 10 cases were confirmed from the 396 samples collected within the 24-hour period.
“We currently have 169 active cases that are being managed at various treatment and isolation centres in the state. We are gradually witnessing a steady decline in the number of confirmed and active cases even as we commence vaccination across the state’s 18 local government areas to protect our people against the virus.”
Obi, who charged residents not to disregard preventive guidelines against the spread of the virus after being inoculated, urged Edo people to complement the government’s efforts at containing the pandemic.
The Incident Manager added: “We urge everyone to continue to adhere to all the general preventive measures against the virus, including washing our hands frequently with soap under running water for at least 20 seconds or the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizer; avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands; avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness, maintaining at least 2 metres (6 feet) distance.
“Cover your mouth and nose properly with a tissue paper when sneezing and/or coughing, and dispose tissue properly; obey National and State directives on avoiding large gatherings and finally, get vaccinated at the various designated vaccination centres in the State.”
