The Edo State Government has restated the need for more residents to get inoculated with the COVID-19 vaccines to reduce deaths from the deadly virus and contain the third wave of the pandemic.
The Head of the state’s COVID-19 case management, Dr. Ebomwonyi Osagie, gave the charge while speaking to journalists during the daily briefing on COVID-19 at the Government House in Benin City.
Noting that the state recorded three more deaths of unvaccinated persons, Osagie urged residents to complement the government’s efforts at ensuring the health and safety of citizens by getting vaccinated.
According to him, “Edo State, in the last 24 hours, collected 394 samples and recorded 14 new cases, 16 recoveries with 639 active cases that are being managed at various treatment and isolation centres in the state.”
Stating that deaths from the third wave of the pandemic have risen to 81, Osagie said the new deaths are that of “28-year-old and 80-year-old males, as well as a 50-year-old female. They were all unvaccinated.”
On his part, Permanent Secretary, Edo State Ministry of Health, Dr. Osamwonyi Irowa further urged citizens to ensure they are vaccinated to protect themselves from the dreaded COVID-19 disease.
He said: “We have seen more deaths from unvaccinated persons; we are losing so many persons from preventable causes. We can prevent these persons from dying from COVID-19 because it makes primary disease conditions worsen and make the person succumb to death.
“A case to be mentioned is that of a 28-year-old male suffering from kidney disease that died; possibly he would have lived long but for COVID-19, which made him succumb to the challenge that he was facing.
“Vaccination is important and necessary. When vaccinated, one will not succumb readily to the primary disease condition, and even if infected, will not readily die from it and if vaccinated and get hospitalized, one will not succumb easily to death.”
