… recruits new teachers to address shortage of teaching staff
The Edo State Government has said the state’s new policy on education will improve the quality of education and enhance the learning outcomes in schools, in line with the government’s plan to upgrade education in the state to meet international standards.
The Commissioner for Education, Dr. Joan Osa-Oviawe, stated this on Tuesday during the Edo Education Policy Town Hall meeting convened by the Ministry of Education, at the Imaguero Hall, in Benin City.
According to her, “One of the things that we are trying to do in Edo is to update our educational policies because it is several years old. With the new reality that we are faced with, it became important that we look at certain issues and introduce the use of technology into our schools.
“In the primary schools right now, with the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST) programme, we are doing what we call standard lesson notes. This means that every school across the state is learning the same thing simultaneously.”
She noted, “We are tracking what the teachers are doing and how they are teaching students. Since 2008, Edo has not hired teachers; but thank God that Governor Godwin Obaseki has started hiring teachers for our schools.
“In the primary schools, we have hired teachers and they have been posted. If your child is in any of our schools and reports to you that they don’t have teachers in any of their subjects, please report to the Ministry of Education. We will address it immediately.”
Osa-Oviawe further stated, “We have also recruited teachers in our junior secondary schools and are now recruiting teachers for our senior secondary schools. By the end of this year, we would have filled the majority of the vacancies in our schools.”
“It is the desire of our governor that every local government will have their education center. What this means is that every board that is in charge of schools in the state will be brought close to you,” she added.
In her contribution, a parent, Mrs. Victoria Akande, commended the governor for his infrastructural development across technical schools in the state.
