The Edo state governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has said that religion should not be the basis for disunity and division in Nigeria.

He made this statement on Thursday, April 6, 2023, during the breaking of the Ramadan fast with the Otaru of Auchi, HRH Alhaji Aliru Momoh, Ikelebe III, in Auchi.

The Governor said that the nation’s leaders need to do more to unite the people and to get them to see that the issues in the nation are beyond ethnicity and religion.

“The role of leaders is to overcome challenges, and to give hope to their people.

“Religion should not be a basis for dividing us as a people. We’ve always had people of different faiths live in this country as one, and we’ve always interacted as one.

“Those who are playing the religious cards are doing so for very selfish reasons,” the governor said.

Speaking on the significance of the overlapping of this year’s Ramadan fast and Easter celebration, Mr. Obaseki said that the coincidence points to the fact that Nigerians must understand the presence of God in Nigeria’s affairs, particularly at a time of political and economic upheaval.

He said: “It calls for sober reflection. It calls for prayers, and it calls for supplications to God Almighty.”

The governor was accompanied on the visit by the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Toni Iyoha, Commissioners and other officials of the State Government.
