BOWFT 2024: Obaseki Urges Leaders, Stakeholders to Take Interest in Young Women, Youth Affairs

…as Nassarawa Amazons emerges winner of BOWFT

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has urged leaders in Nigeria and other stakeholders to take interest in the affairs that affect women and young people in the country.

He made this remark in Benin City, on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, during the closing ceremony of the 2024 Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament (BOWFT), which hosted 13 First Ladies across the 36 States of the Federation.

According to the Governor, “I am very excited that we have been able to keep this tournament going for 4 years, and it has made its mark by addressing some topical issues for young people, particularly young women. This year has been focused on a big problem in society today, which has to do with teenage pregnancy and abandoned babies.

“I believe that tournaments like this will highlight these social issues, while on the fun side, presents a keenly contested football match. I think the spirits of the girls are high. It’s been very well contested. 20 national teams joined them this year. And I believe that events like this should serve as an impetus to other leaders and stakeholders to take an interest in the affairs that affect young people in Nigeria.”

Speaking on the cash prize for the winner of the tournament, Obaseki said: “I think the prize money is quite handsome. Even though Edo Queens is not among the top two, I believe it just shows that the match is fair, open, and the best team wins.”

The event saw the final match between Nassarawa Amazons and Bayelsa Queens, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium which ended in a penalty shootout in favour of Nassarawa Amazons.
