The Edo State Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues under the aegis of the State Government, in collaboration with the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (RoLAC) and other stakeholders, has flagged off the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) campaign in the State.
The Functioning Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Joy Ihensenkien, while addressing relevant stakeholders, emphasized the importance of collective action in preventing GBV, which she noted inhibits societal growth and progress.
“We cannot do this alone. We are calling on every family, organization, and individuals to take a stand against gender-based violence, challenge harmful practices, and support survivors. Together, let us break the culture of silence,” She stated.
Mrs. Ihensenkien reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to supporting victims of GBV, citing the establishment of the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) and the Vivian Centre as well as the domestication of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law 2021, to provide holistic support.
The State programme Coordinator of RoLAC, Mr. Imonitien Omokhodion, emphasized the need to report cases of GBV as soon as they occur or are witnessed. He assured that victims will be adequately supported and perpetrators will be brought to justice concerning any case of GBV.
The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, Dr. Festus Alenkhe, commended the Team for its resilience and continuous efforts in combating and creating awareness against GBV, especially physical assaults. He assured the Team that its message will be widely publicised.
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the National Council for Women Society, Edo State Chapter, Mrs. Taiwo Inumidu, warned that abusers who take pride in abusing women should refrain from such acts or face the consequences.
The highlight of the sensitization campaigns included a road walk from the State Secretariat Complex across nearby streets and notable locations like the Vegetable Market, Oba Market, the NUJ secretariat and others.
The event is part of the global 16 Days of Activism against GBV, which begins from 25th November through 10th December annually. The campaign is supported by RoLAC, Hart Land Alliance, and the United Nations. It aims to create a sense of ownership and responsibility among stakeholders and to promote a culture of zero tolerance for GBV in Edo State.
