Edo State Govt declares war on perpetrators of GBV

… Police approves deployment of officers to Ministry

By Peace Temisan Osemwegie

The Edo State Government through its Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, has secured the deployment of Police officers as part of its strategies to combat issues of gender-based violence (GBV) in the State.

The approval for the deployment of the Police officers was granted by the new Commissioner of Police (CP.) Betty Enekpen Otimeyin, during a courtesy visit on the CP in Benin City, by the Management Team of the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, led by its Commissioner, Chief (Barr.) Marie Bisi Idaomi.

Hon. Idaomi while appreciating CP. Otimeyin, underscored the significance of having a female leader at the helm of the Police Command, to include efficiency and reliability in the crusade against crime. She posited that the collaboration between their offices would lead to a significant reduction in GBV cases in the State.

According to Hon. Idaomi, the prompt approval for the deployment of two Police officers to her Ministry was consequent upon her request during the meeting with the Police Boss in the State. She maintained that the development would avail swift arrests and responses to GBV cases and concluded that the approval reaffirmed the Police commitment to combating GBV in Edo State.

CP. Otimeyin pledged her commitments in collaborating with the Ministry to ensure swift responses to issues of GBV. She expressed concerns over rising number of GBV cases and sued the Ministry for the urgent need for increased sensitization and awareness programmes aimed at dissuading perpetrators of GBV.

The historic visit marks a significant milestone in the fight against GBV in Edo State. The synergy between Hon. Idaomi and CP. Otimeyin is expected to yield positive results in ensuring a safer and more just society for the vulnerable in the State.
