The Edo State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu and the functioning Executive Chairman of Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Hon. Ebanehita Sonia Omonzane, have unanimously pledged the commitment of the State Governor, Sen. Monday Okpebholo to ensuring the safety and dignity of special‑needs learners in the State.

The State Education principals made the pledge during an on‑the‑spot assessment of the Special School for the Visually Impaired, Hearing Impaired and Developmentally Challenged pupils, located on the premises of Ivbiore Primary School on Friday, June 20, 2025, in Benin City.

The Team of Education experts was conducted around the School facilities by the Head Teacher of Ivbiore Primary School, Mrs. Omonedo Eunice, in company of the School Based Management Committee (SBMC) Chairman, Mr. Nosa Obadagbonyi. The Team observed dilapidated classrooms, abandoned buildings, and widespread vandalism of school structures and equipment meant for learners with special needs. It was confirmed that pupils had vacated the premises for safety, leaving the School complex empty and vulnerable to further damage.

Dr. Iyamu reaffirming the State Governor’s passion for inclusive education, stated, “We are optimistic that a swift and positive outcome will emerge from this assessment. An immediate investigation will be launched to determine why construction stalled, why vandalism has been allowed to occur, and to ensure the safety and dignity of our special‑needs learners.”

In an interview, the functioning Executive Chairman of Edo SUBEB described the scene as displeasing, and expressed deep concerns over the interruption of the pupils’ education. She stated, “His Excellency, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, the Governor of Edo State is deeply committed to the welfare and quality education for all Edo children. We will brief him on the deplorable state of this Facility, and I believe that, very soon, positive action will be taken to restore and complete the necessary infrastructure.”

Other key stakeholders in the delegation included the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mrs. Edith Ebomoyi; the Edo SUBEB Board Member representing Edo South Senatorial District, Pastor (Mrs.) Angela Okpamen; the Director of Special Programme, Mrs. Eunice Onuabhagbe; amongst others.
