A South-South Women’s Development Workshop was recently held at the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Secretariat in Ikpoba Slope, Benin City on the 16th of July, 2025 focusing on strengthening women’s leadership within the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN). The event provided a platform for women leaders to share experiences, build skills and contribute to the Union’s goals.
The workshop opened with a welcome address by the MHWUN Zonal Coordinator, Comrade Mercy Omokhodion, who emphasized the significance of the event. In her words, “This is not just another meeting, it is a platform designed to empower, equip and elevate the voices of women in MHWUN both in the workplace and society at large”. She said.
The event saw strong participation from MHWUN women representatives across the South-South, including members from Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Bayelsa and Edo State.
The workshop was graced by important guests, including male leaders from the Nigeria Labour Congress and Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria at the National, State and Branch levels. Their presence served as a strong support for the women in their leadership development.
The National President MHWUN Comrade Dr. Kabiru Ado Sani Minjibir who was ably represented by Comrade Chief Goodluck Ofobruku, the Deputy National President MHWUN challenged the women to strive for greater achievements and to support one another in the pursuit of a stronger union and improved welfare for all members.
Comrade Ogbeide Osagie, Edo State MHWUN Council Chairman, also welcomed the NLC and MHWUN Leaders as well as all attendees to the event and highlighted the importance of the workshop in supporting women’s development, empowerment and capacity-building in the Union. He encouraged the women to put everything they will learn into good use and cascade to their various State and Branch levels.
Awards were presented to deserving members of the MHWUN Union, recognizing their contributions to the growth and success of the union. A seminar was also held on the topic, “Climate Change and Just Transition: Impact on Health Workers”.
