The Edo State Government’s efforts to cushion the effect of coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the state has gotten a boost with the donation of medical supplies and food items from the Benin Club and New Watson Doors Ltd.
The items donated by New Watson Doors Limited include 10,000 facemasks, 5,000 hand gloves, 40 bags (50kg) of flour and 100 bags (50kg) of rice, while Benin Club donated 4,000 facemasks.
Receiving the items, the state’s Head of Service, Anthony Okungbowa Esq., said the state government deeply appreciates the gesture, noting that it was inspiring that a lot of public-spirited organisations were stepping forward to contribute to government’s efforts to cushion the effect of COVID-19.
According to him, “It is good we have continued to receive support from a lot of individuals and organisations as we roll out measures to check the spread of coronavirus.
“For a challenge like this, it is not possible for government to do this alone. This is not a dash; it is a marathon race. We appreciate the goodwill from public-spirited companies in the state and would continue to be transparent in the management of the items received.”
Chief Executive Officer (CEO), New Watson Doors Ltd, Mr. Jiang Xin Hwa, said that the gesture was to identify with government in the wake of the pandemic, noting that the company, which operates at the Utesi Industrial Cluster, would continue to provide as much support needed to cushion the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic.
On his part, President of the Benin Club, Dr. Mathew Oriakhi, said the club believes the state government has done a lot and wanted to lend its widows might to bring succor to Edo people.
He noted that the state government has continued to lead the pace with its response to the COVID-19 pandemic, providing a template for other states to adopt.
