Edo State has recorded 15 new cases and nine more recoveries from coronavirus (COVID-19), as the government steps up measures to contain the second wave of the pandemic.
The State COVID-19 Incident Manager, Dr. Andrew Obi, disclosed this in a virtual meeting of the State COVID-19 Taskforce, chaired by the state governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki.
According to him, “Edo State, within the last 24 hours, recorded 15 new cases of COVID-19 and nine recoveries, with 615 active cases currently receiving treatments from various treatment and isolation centres within the state.”
Obi, who lamented the alarming rise in the number of confirmed cases in the state, urged residents to adhere to guidelines against the spread of the deadly virus to protect themselves and the elderly who are most vulnerable to the disease.
Reiterating that the state is facing a more violent strain of the virus in the second wave of the pandemic, Obi added that all indices including deaths, case positivity, and number of infections, among others are higher in the second wave than the first.
The Incident Manager said the state government is strengthening the enforcement of COVID-19 regulations in the state, reassuring that the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led government remains committed to containing the pandemic and ensuring the wellbeing and safety of residents.
“As the government intensifies efforts to curtail the spread of the virus and protect the majority of Edo people, we urge all residents to comply with all guidelines to contain the second wave of the pandemic, especially regular hand washing and the use of facemasks in public,” he added.
