Edo State has continued to record an increase in the number of deaths of persons who have not been inoculated with the COVID-19 vaccines, as the state, Wednesday, confirmed two more COVID-19-related deaths, raising the total number of fatalities in the third wave of the pandemic in the state to 69.
The State COVID-19 Incident Manager, Dr. Andrew Obi, disclosed this after the daily virtual meeting of the State COVID-19 Taskforce, chaired by the State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki.
Obi said the state also recorded 40 new COVID-19 cases from the 254 samples collected in the last 24 hours, noting that Edo has recorded a total of 1380 confirmed cases since the outbreak of the third wave of the pandemic.
While decrying the rising number of infections and deaths from the virus, the Incident Manager reiterated the need for all residents to get vaccinated, as well as comply with non-pharmaceutical interventions to contain the pandemic, including the compulsory use of facemasks in the public and regular hand washing, among others.
He said the vaccination was necessary in ensuring the health of citizens and achieving herd immunity against the virus, urging all residents to leverage the opportunity of the availability of the vaccines in the state to get full protection against the COVID-19 virus.
According to him, “Edo State, in the last 24 hours, recorded two more COVID-19-related deaths, zero recoveries and 40 new confirmed cases, with 709 active cases that are being managed at various treatment and isolation centres across the state.”
“We have now collected 15,706 samples and confirmed 1380 cases, 602 recoveries and 69 deaths since the outbreak of the third wave of the pandemic in the state.”
