The Edo State Government has revved up measures to contain the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic by decontaminating homes and offices of about 1,503 confirmed cases, contact-tracing 4089 suspected persons and intensifying Active Case Search (ACS) activities in over 1070 rural and urban communities in the state.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Patrick Okundia, who spoke to journalists in Benin City, reaffirmed the government’s commitment towards protecting Edo people, especially the elderly who are most vulnerable to the virus.
Okundia, while urging residents to take responsibility and support the government’s efforts at curtailing the spread of the virus, noted: “Edo has now recorded a total of 1503 confirmed cases, 7102 suspected cases, 57 COVID-19-related deaths and 910 discharged persons.”
He added: “We have observed poor compliance with COVID-19 preventive measures among members of the public. This is even as some submit wrong addresses and phone numbers during sample collection which makes it difficult for contact tracers to track down confirmed cases after laboratory results are released.
“The government urges all residents to stay at home and observe all precautionary measures against the spread of the infectious disease, including regular handwashing with soap under running water and the use of alcohol-based hand sanitisers. Cover your mouth and nose properly when sneezing and/or coughing.”
Okundia, however, reiterated the need for citizens to present or report themselves through the Edo State COVID-19 toll free response lines, 08001235111 or 08002200110, following any recent travel from high incidence states or contact with confirmed cases.
The commissioner disclosed that the state has tested over 6,985 persons, out of which 5,293 have tested negative, noting that the government has intensified public enlightenment and sensitisation on the need to get screened /tested and for prompt presentation at the designated health facilities when symptomatic.
Okundia reassured that necessary actions are being taken regarding Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) practices in Irrua Specialist Hospital (ISTH), University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) and the Stella Obasanjo Hospital Isolation Centre (SOHIC).
