COVID-19: Edo govt intensifies surveillance on adherence to safety protocol in restaurants, supermarkets

The Edo State Government has intensified its surveillance mechanism to ensure restaurants, malls, eateries and supermarkets in the state adhere to the precautionary health and safety protocols to guard against the spread of the coronavirus (COVID) pandemic.

A delegation from the risk communication pillar of government’s COVID-19 response team have been on a surveillance tour of restaurants, banks, supermarkets, malls, eateries, cafes, bars, among others, to ensure that the safety protocols are adhered to in the wake of the second wave of the pandemic.

Public Health Educator at the Edo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (ESPHDA) and a member of the risk communication team, Mrs. Irene Uabor, said that the team has been on a tour to major hotspots across Benin metropolis to ensure that owners of restaurants, supermarkets, malls and cinema houses adhere to the safety precautions in their facilities, especially with the influx of people to their facilities during the festive season.”

According to her, “On the tour, we ensured that we met with the top management of the facilities and impressed on them the importance of providing the necessities to ensure that those coming to their facilities adhere to precautionary health and safety protocols to protect their customers and their staff.”

She said the team visited outlets on Sapele Road, where they inspected the facilities to ensure that the necessary health and safety precautions are being adhered to and that the facilities have rules to ensure social distancing, compulsory wearing of facemasks and mandatory handwashing or use of hand sanitisers.
