The Edo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Adams Oshiomhole, has assured officials of Edo State University, Uzairue and its Teaching Hospital, of the State Government’s commitment to improving healthcare services in the State.
Dr. Oshiomhole gave the assurance during a courtesy visit by the officials to his office at the Ministry of Health in Benin City. He told his guests that the State Governor, Sen. Monday Okpebholo is passionate about healthcare and the quality of medical services accessible to the people in the State.
The Commissioner disclosed that plans are already underway to extend the retirement age for doctors, from 60 to 70 years, a policy aimed at retaining experienced medical personnel in the State, to address the challenges lack of medical professionals at the Teaching Hospital.
The delegation, led by Dr. Atoe Kenneth and Dr. Moses Imologomhe, sought support for the Hospital’s development, highlighting its critical roles in training medical students and its status as one of the most accessible healthcare facilities in Edo North Senatorial District. They emphasized the need to enhance its capacity to serve the host communities effectively.
According to the Team, Key challenges facing the hospital include poor funding, inadequate infrastructure, inadequate staff, amongst others. The Chief Medical Director, Dr Moses Imologomhe, appealed for legislative support to establish the Teaching Hospital officially through a bill at the Edo State House of Assembly. The Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, Dr. Tijani Oseni, expressed confidence in Governor Okpebholo’s ability to facilitate improvements in the healthcare sector.
