Edo 2020: Cedar Club of Benin supports Obaseki’s re-election bid

…commends gov’s sterling performance in infrastructure, institutional reforms, others

A socio-cultural and non-political organisation of Benin elites, the Cedar Club of Benin, has thrown its weight behind the reelection bid of Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on account of the governor’s sterling performance in institutional reforms, infrastructure renewal and accountability, among others.

In a statement, President, Cedar Club of Benin, Prof. Victor Edosa Omozuwa, declared the group’s support for Obaseki’s bid for a second term in the forthcoming 2020 governorship election in the state.

He said, “We, in Cedar Club, hold the view that Governor Obaseki has done well and therefore should not be denied a second term. When former Governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Aliu Oshiomhole presented Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki to Edo people as his choice candidate for the 2016 gubernatorial elections under the auspices of the All Progressives Congress (APC), he vehemently told Edo people that Godwin Obaseki would not only build on his legacies but would definitely surpass his own records.

Prof. Omozuwa continued “We sincerely believe Godwin Obaseki as Governor has indeed done so. He has totally transformed the Secretariat Complex that was abandoned since the era of Brigadier-General Dr. Samuel Ogbemudia of blessed memory. The network of roads being constructed across the length and breadth of the state is there for all to see. Salaries and pensions are paid regularly.

“Officers, who retire from the service now begin to enjoy monthly pensions immediately, from the month following their retirement. He equally has tackled the issue of pension arrears left behind by previous administrations. Therefore, workers and pensioners are happy with him.”

According to him, children in public schools and their teachers are enjoying the best of attention under the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (Edo-BEST) programme through which teachers are being trained and retrained to use modern technology to ensure that children are given the best of education.

He noted that the governor’s basic education reforms has resulted in increase in school enrolment, adding, Even in this era of lockdown occasioned by the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, primary school children in Edo State are being taught by their teachers through virtual learning. The former Staff Training Centre in the Government Reservation Area in Benin City has been reconstructed into a world-class Academy to help in the training of officers in both the civil and public services for effective service delivery.”

The group also commended the Governor Obaseki led-administration’s efforts to facilitate the provision of stable power supply to Edo people through Public Private Partnership initiatives such as the Ossiomo Power Plant at Ologbo.

“From the above remarkable achievements of Godwin Obaseki’s administration, Cedar Club strongly believes that Godwin Obaseki very well deserves a second term. Therefore, Cedar Club calls on all well-meaning and patriotic sons and daughters of Edo State to support him in his bid for a second term in office,” Prof. Omozuwa added.
