By Osemudiamhen Gloria

The Coordinator, Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, has sued for the review of some existing laws with a view to strengthening them for the overall protection of women and children in Edo State.

Mrs. Anani solicited the Federation of women Lawyers (FIDA) on the need for collaborative efforts to address the challenges facing women and children in the State during a courtesy visit by the Association, on the Office of the First Lady at the Government House in Benin City.

She appreciated FIDA’s interventions in the crusade against human rights violations and assured it of her commitment to supporting initiatives that promote women’s empowerment and gender equality in the State.

“We need to review many of our laws as some are ineffective. Justice delayed is justice denied. For instance, the case of the Okpella girl who was raped on December 24, 2024, is still pending. Such cases should be expedited,” Mrs. Anani submitted.

Mrs. Anani emphasized that the State Governor, Sen. Monday Okpebholo is deeply committed to protecting women and children, and will take all necessary steps to ensure their rights are safeguarded.

The Edo State Chairperson of FIDA, Mrs. Francisca Elema, who led the delegation, expressed gratitude to the First Lady for her dedication to the welfare of residents in Edo State. She cited Section 27 of the FIDA Constitution, saying that the Wife of the Governor, the Chief Judge, and the Attorney General, hold honorary positions as patrons and matrons of FIDA.

Mrs. Elema reiterated FIDA’s commitment to protecting vulnerable women and children through legal frameworks. She however mentioned that FIDA faces some challenges which include unfinished infrastructure, non-functional vehicles, and funding constraints and appealed to Her Excellency for support in addressing such challenges.

Similarly, Mrs. Anani also welcomed a delegation from the Federation of Muslim Women Association of Nigeria (FOMWA), led by Hajiya (Mrs.) Audu Usenat Esohe. She explained that FOMWA is a non-governmental faith-based association and the Umbrella body of Muslim Women Association in Nigeria with members drawn from all the states of the Federation, including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

The Group sought collaboration on efforts to combat gender-based violence (GBV), and women empowerment. It also solicited for the provision of a coaster bus to aid its activities.

Mrs. Anani pledged her support, emphasizing the importance of unity, solidarity, and promoting peace in all aspects of life, saying, “In any way we could be of great assistance, our doors are open to you”.
