The First Lady of Edo State, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki has called on women in the state to stand by the truth and exhibit a sincerity of purpose while also urging the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) not to relent in helping women and children fight for their rights.
Receiving Executives of Edo State’s branch of FIDA at the Edo State Government House in Benin City on Thursday, she said the government would give priority attention to improving the welfare of children in the state.
Mrs Obaseki also acknowledged the group for their passion and for identifying with the present administration in its determination to move the state forward.
She, however, appealed to FIDA to work with the government because the government would soon commence advocacy programmes across the various local government areas, which would sensitise women on their rights.
She said government would ameliorate some of their challenges especially in securing a befitting office secretariat and assisting them to attend conferences both nationally and internationally.
Meanwhile, FIDA chairperson, Mrs. Edeke Maria Omozele said the body’s activities included seeking legislative reform to facilitate passing the bill on equal opportunity aimed at guaranteeing women elevation in political positions.
FIDA, according to Barrister Omozele also collaborated with security agencies and the Ministry of Women Affairs to seek legal justice on issues of violence against children and the vulnerable, while also disclosing the union’s resolve to execute an advocacy campaign in Esan land to sensitise people on the issue of female children having a stake in their parents’ estates.
