Worried by the indiscriminate manner some Edo residents flout environmental laws, the Edo State Government has commenced a monitoring exercise to check the ugly trend.
The Government through a taskforce of the Ministry of Environment and Sustainability was on April 22nd, 2022, at the Sokponba, Igun and Omoruyi axis of the Benin metropolis to monitor the level of compliance with environmental laws.
Environmental officers were seen on site cautioning the residents on how to dispose of their refuse properly.
Abatement notices were served to defaulting individuals, facility users/owners, landlords, tenants and occupants.
Environmental offences such as blocked drains, accumulation of dumps, discharge of waste water into the gutters which were seen around the Erie axis in Oredo Local Government Area, improper disposal of refuse was also attended to.
Areas where illegal dump sites were seen were also served violation notice.
The Director of Enforcement, Mr. Isaac Ero, and his Environmentalcounterpart, Mrs. Blessing Egharevba, Director, Environmental Quality Management Services, who led the team of environmental officers and taskforce to ensure the success of the exercise, said it would be a continuous one and advised citizens to ensure that their environment is clean to avoid sanctions in line with the environmental laws of Edo State.
