The Edo State Government has launched its fleet management project, which is aimed at improving the service life, utilization and distribution of state-owned vehicles to workers.

This was disclosed by the State Head of Service, Mr. Anthony Okungbowa Esq. on Thursday, 13 October, 2022 during a workshop, tagged: “Roll out of the EDSG Mega Connect”, with the theme: “Providing Solutions to work place Mobility”, at Government House, Benin City.

According to Okungbowa: “Over time, we have failed as a government to manage our vehicular resources well. Each ministry, department and agency (MDA) is responsible for the management, operation and maintenance of vehicles deployed to it.

“This has led to a situation where there is sub-optimal utilization, uneven distribution, lack of central vehicle inventory, non-existent quality assurance and also loss of State-owned vehicles.”

He said that a fleet management committee has been constituted by the Governor to ascertain the state of government-owned vehicles and design a technology-enabled fleet management system for the state.

The Head of Service added: “The new technology-driven initiative by the Governor is proposed to help with the management and maintenance of State-owned vehicles with the view of minimizing cost for the purchase of vehicles, maintenance and fueling.

“The overall goal is to improve on service delivery by ensuring that the automobile resources of the state are put to optimal use and are available to all for the performance of the day-to-day tasks.”

Special Adviser to the Governor on Strategy, Policy, Performance and Project Management, Mrs Sarah Ajose-Adeogun, said: “The fleet management system will use technology to manage the vehicular assets, ascertain where they are and what they are being used for.

“It will also help in reducing fueling cost, fleet optimization, asset tracking, lower vehicle maintenance cost, improve planning and extend asset life as well as positive driver orientation.”
