Edo State Government established the Edo State Health Insurance Scheme (EdoHIS) to develop and sustain better access to healthcare services for residents of the State through community-based contributory programme and deliberate stakeholders’ involvement. The vision of EdoHIS is to achieve Universal Health Coverage goals in the State by providing easy access to healthcare for the benefit of all Edo residents.
The strategic objective of EdoHIS is to strengthen the foundation of the State’s Healthcare system by reducing out-of-pocket spending and improving access to effective, efficient, sustainable and quality healthcare services. The EdoHIS operates under the auspices of the Edo State Health Insurance Commission (EdoHIC), a body that is responsible for the implementation of its programmes and policies.
The Edo State Health Insurance Commission also ensures effective implementation of the policies and procedures of the State Health Insurance Scheme through inclusiveness, transparency and community driven processes, ensuring appropriate regulations and guidelines to maintain the viability of the scheme.
The Health Insurance Scheme provides intervention for a wide range of health issues, including primary areas of healthcare such as promotion and preventive health services, outpatient services, Internal medicine, paediatric care, maternal and neonatal services and other primary care areas, as well as secondary healthcare areas or specialist care areas such as paediatrics, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, physiotherapy, surgery, dental care and Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) treatments.
The Executive Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, had in a statement commemorating the 2022 World Health Day, noted that his Government has taken prominent measures in ensuring a healthier environment for residents in the State. According to Governor Obaseki, “As a government, we have taken critical steps to ensure a healthier environment and will sustain investment in preserving the health, safety and environment of our people.”
The Edo Health Insurance Scheme is one of several opportunities the Obaseki administration has created in its quest to further healthy living among residents. It therefore behoves all Edo residents to register for the State’s Health Insurance Scheme in order to secure their health. To register, one can visit an accredited enrollment centre or contact the service representative via 08073060807 or 08139833630.
Various health plans are available in the scheme. With N50 a day, one can access quality healthcare. This token of N50 translates to N1,500 per month and N18,000 per year. The various healthcare packages include the Equity, Students and Bronze packages at the rate of N18,000 per annum, Silver package at the rate of N35,000 per annum, Gold package at N68,000 per annum, and Enhanced private plan (Platinum) at N75,000 per annum.
The Edo State Government under the leadership of Governor Godwin Obaseki, is working relentlessly to achieve goal 3 of the Sustainable Development Goals, which is “good health and well-being.” The United Nations target for this goal is “to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.” Governor Obaseki remains committed to providing quality healthcare for all Edo residents.
