Since the inception of the current administration, Governor Godwin Obaseki has created an atmosphere that enables the tourism sector of Edo State to thrive.
He has shown unwavering commitment to boosting the tourism sector as he has continuously pursued initiatives that attract both local and international investors and visitors.
There are several activities that help to promote tourism in the State and one of such is the annual Okpekpe Road Race.
Okpekpe is famous for its unique location on the hilltop in Edo North Senatorial District and its huge agricultural and investment potentials make it a suitable tourism destination.
The Okpekpe Road Race which is an annual event in Edo State is a 10-kilometer road race over hills and tarred roads, starting from Apana Road and ending in Okpekpe Town.
The road race attracts world-class runners from around the world who run side-by-side with local athletes.
The race is returning bigger and better after the COVID-19 induced postponements it suffered in 2020 and 2021.
This year’s Okpekpe Race which happens to be the eighth edition, just as previous years, promises to be very explosive and will be held on the 28th of May 2022.
According to the organizers of the event, preparation is already in advanced stage and the participating countries include Nigeria, Ethiopia, Kenya amongst others.
Undoubtedly, Okpekpe Road Race has great tourism and economic values; hence, the need to promote it.
The Race will enable the State to showcase the ongoing infrastructural development across the three senatorial districts under the Governor Obaseki-led administration as well as the unique tourist sites that depict outstanding beauty that will certainly astonish visitors.
As people come from different parts of the world to witness and participate in the Road Race, economic activities, not only in Okpekpe Town but also in other parts of the State, will definitely receive a boost.
There are various hotels equipped with top-notch facilities available in the State where visitors could lodge and have a memorable experience.
Similarly, the restaurants offer great dining experience in both local and continental delicacies.
Governor Obaseki has made laudable achievements in the area of security in the State as he is very much passionate about protecting the lives and property of Edo people.
Runners and spectators have no reason to worry as adequate security arrangement is assured, before, during and even after the event.
Edo State is blessed to have a Governor who takes delight in creating an enabling environment for the people, particularly the youths, to showcase their talent to the world, and very much committed to boosting the various sectors of the economy, particularly the tourism sector.
