The Edo State Government, through the state’s Public Works Volunteers (PUWOV) on Tuesday, embarked on massive sensitization across the Benin metropolis, to enlighten motorists and other road users on the need to ensure compliance with traffic signs.

The PUWOV team also intensified the placement of caution signs in strategic locations in the Benin metropolis, in line with the directive of the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, to ensure sanity across the state.

The caution signs had various inscriptions including ‘No Packing’, ‘No Picking of Passengers’, ‘No U-Turn’ and ‘No Dropping of Passengers’, among others.

The caution signs were placed in strategic locations in Benin City, including New Benin, 3rd East Circular, Aduwawa, Ramat, Agip, Oliha, Uselu, Egor, and Oluku, among others.

Speaking on behalf of the PUWOV State Commander, Mukhtar Yusuf-Osagie, PUWOV Director of Operations, Mr. Sylvester Omijie, said the signs are to create awareness and educate the drivers so as to ensure safety and sanity on the roads, especially during the yuletide.

According to him, “We have been doing this quarterly during the year, providing caution signs to educate drivers on where not to pick passengers, where not to drop passengers and areas not to make U-Turns. However, after placing these signs in these areas, we discover that touts and hoodlums remove these signs from the roads.

“We have now derived a new method of tackling the challenge, which is dropping the caution signs in the mornings and picking them up in the evening.”

“We are using this opportunity to beg the public to oblige to our caution signs to help us in our efforts to ensure sanity on roads across the state, as this will further ensure a free-flow of traffic,” he urged.
