Towards ensuring energy fairness and efficiency, the Edo State Government, through the Ministry of Mining and Energy, has reiterated its commitment to empowering residents with reliable power solutions.
On Thursday, January 15, 2025, the State took delivery of over 1,000 new prepaid meters under the Edo Mass Metering Programme. The initiative is a direct response to the long-standing challenges posed by estimated billing, which has historically burdened residents with arbitrary and often inflated electricity bills.
The State Government through the provision of prepaid meters, is addressing the challenges head-on, by offering residents the tools to accurately measure their energy consumption. Unlike estimated billing, which is often inaccurate and lacks transparency, prepaid metering ensures that residents only pay for the electricity they consume. This fosters accountability among electricity providers and eliminates disputes over billing discrepancies.
The prepaid meter enables residents to monitor their energy usage in real time, plan their expenses effectively, and avoid the frustrations associated with overbilling.
The Edo State Government’s collaboration with key stakeholders like New Hampshire Capital has been effective and efficient in driving the initiative. By securing investor-backed funding for the prepaid meters, the State ensures no financial burden on its treasury while delivering tangible benefits to its citizens.
The introduction of the prepaid meters is part of a broader strategy to modernize Edo State’s energy infrastructure. Alongside solar mini-grid projects; enhanced regulatory frameworks; and partnerships with energy investors; the State Government is laying the foundation for a more sustainable and equitable energy landscape.
The metering initiative exemplifies the State Government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for its citizens. By replacing arbitrary billing practices with accurate, user-controlled systems, the Edo State Government is empowering residents, reducing energy waste, and fostering a more transparent and efficient energy sector.
Edo State Government remains resolute in its mission to deliver modern, equitable, and sustainable energy solutions to its citizens, marking yet another milestone in its journey toward energy independence and economic empowerment.
