The Edo State Government has started the registration process of road sweepers into the State’s Health Insurance Scheme in fulfilment of the promise of Governor Godwin Obaseki’s commitment to provide comprehensive healthcare coverage and quality medical services to road sweepers.
In a statement, the General Manager of the Edo State Waste Management Board, Mrs. Rita Idehai, represented by the Head of the Commercial Department, Mr. Martin Akhigbe, emphasized the initiative’s importance in recognizing and valuing the contributions of road sweepers to the State’s cleanliness and environmental ambience. The Health Insurance Scheme is expected to cover a wide range of medical needs, providing financial relief and promoting the well-being of the essential workers.
Mr. Akhigbe said it was the directives of the State Government that all eligible road sweepers in the State to participate in the registration process in order to benefit from the Scheme. He highlighted that the registration aligns with the sweepers’ revalidation process and emphasized that failure to register would attract severe disciplinary consequences. He added that failure to register would also imply non-existent employment (ghost worker) which the Board aims to eliminate.
The Ag. Director of the Customer Service Department, Edo State Health Insurance Commission, Mrs. Aya O. Femi-Monye, underscored Governor Godwin Obaseki’s commitment to improving the welfare and health standards of all Edo State workers and residents. She highlighted the Governor’s determination to reduce healthcare costs across the State, citing the Health Insurance Scheme as a pivotal initiative towards achieving the goal.
The integration of road sweepers into the Health Insurance Scheme underscores the Edo State Government’s commitment to enhancing social welfare and healthcare accessibility. It not only supports road sweepers but also a testament to inclusive governance.
