Edo State Govt cracks down on illegal miners to curb retrogression

Towards promoting standardised mining practices, curbing environmental degradation and enhancing accurate transfer of socio-economic benefit to the State, the Edo State Ministry of Mining in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development has embarked on an inspection of two illegal mining sites in Erhua Community near Ehor and Iruekpen communities.

The illegal mining sites which were discovered and sealed off, were found to be operating without proper licenses and in blatant disregard for environmental regulations and mining ethics.

The inspection which was led by the Edo State Commissioner for Mining, Hon. Andrew Ijegbai, revealed shocking evidences of environmental degradation and life-threatening activities in the areas. The illegal mining site at Erhua was found to be operating close to the Federal Road and openly excavating under high-tension lines, posing significant risks to the Community. The other illegal mining site at Iruekpen was operating without license, no consent from proper authorities and no environmental Impact assessment.

Hon. Ijegbai, who expressed shock at the development, condemned the illegal mining operations, saying, “These operations not only degrade the environment but also compromised the safety and well-being of the people living in the affected areas, coupled with posing a threat to the States’ power infrastructure”.

He reaffirmed the State’s commitment to eradicating illegal activities in the Mining Sector, as evident in the Governor’s directives to investigate and ban illegal mining operations in the State. In his words, “The impact of illegal mining on our environment and communities cannot be overemphasized. We are committed to working with the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals to root out these illegal activities and promote sustainable mining practices that benefit our people and our environment.”

The Commissioner stated that the Edo State Government, under the leadership of Governor Okpebholo, places premium on environmental protection and sustainable development. He added that the State Government’s efforts to combat illegal mining and its attendant activities are part of a broader strategy to promote economic growth, protect the environment to improve the living standards of residents.

Other officials on the inspection Team include the Zonal Mines Officer (South – South) of the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, Engr. Ganiyu Wasiu Ajibade, the Chairman of the Edo State Taskforce on Protection of Government Property, Mr. Eugene Okoloise, the Director of Mining, Edo State Ministry of Mining, Mr. Omoruyi Ihianle.

The collaboration between the Edo State Ministry of Mining and the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development is a significant step towards addressing the challenges posed by illegal mining activities. By working together, the two ministries aim to strengthen regulations, improve enforcement, and promote sustainable mining practices that will benefit all stakeholders.
