As part of efforts to combat Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), the Edo State Government, through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), has concluded a four-day intensive training programme for personnel of the Uromi Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC).
The training which took place at the Lumen Christi Pastoral House Conference Hall, Uromi in Edo Central Senatorial District, was aimed at deepening the knowledge and capacity of personnel, equipping them with the skills necessary for delivering professional services to survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence in the Area.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Chief Bisi Idaomi Esq., represented by the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Desk Officer, Mrs. Eseosa Onebamoi, commended the participants for their active engagement and commitment throughout the programme.
According to Chief Idaomi, “As we bring this impactful training to a close, I wish to express my heartfelt appreciation to all participants for your active engagement, unwavering dedication and eagerness to learn throughout this programme. Your commitment to enhancing your skills and knowledge is the cornerstone for strengthening our collective response to Sexual and Gender-Based Violence, and ensuring the dignity and protection of survivors”.
Chief Idaomi emphasized that the training marked not an end, but a vital beginning, urging participants to apply the knowledge gained in their daily work to create a safer, more responsive environment for survivors. In her words, “The Ministry remains committed to supporting you in this mission. Let the knowledge and skills you have acquired translate into compassionate, efficient and professional service delivery for women, children and other vulnerable persons who turn to us in their darkest hours”.
The Commissioner encouraged collaborative efforts among stakeholders to ensure a society rooted in justice, equality and respect, appreciating the facilitators for their professionalism and dedication in tailoring the training to address the specific challenges faced by communities.
”To our expert facilitators and trainers, your wealth of knowledge, patience and professionalism have been invaluable. You have not only imparted critical skills but have also inspired a renewed passion and responsibility in our personnel”. She said.
Chief Idaomi acknowledged the crucial role of the International Organization for Migration in the success of the programme, appreciating the Organisation’s resources, technical support and partnership, while describing the collaboration as one which demonstrated the power of unity in driving meaningful social change.
The International Organization for Migration Counter Trafficking Project Assistant and Benin Office Gender Focal Person, Mrs. Ayo Amen Ediae, facilitated an engaging and informative session on the Prevention of Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment (PSEAH). Her lecture emphasized the necessity for ethical standards, accountability and survivor-centered practices within all support services. She highlighted the importance of creating safe spaces for survivors and ensuring that personnel understand their responsibility in upholding dignity and professionalism in every aspect of work.
Other facilitators delivered lectures including the “Overview of the Concept and Dynamics of Gender-Based Violence”; detailed explanations of relevant laws and policies such as the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Law, the Child Rights (CRL) Law, the Persons With Disabilities (PWDS) Law, the Operational Framework of SARCs, including the Roles and Responsibilities of various service providers, Effective History-Taking and Documentation, the Fundamentals of Forensic Examination and Evidence Collection and the Legal Processes Involved in Prosecuting SGBV cases.
The facilitators provided guidance on Expert Testimony and Court Attendance, as part of requisite skills for SARC personnel to be well-equipped in the area of supporting survivors through the judicial processes.
