The Edo State Government has reaffirmed its unwavering dedication to ensuring timely and complete pension payments for retirees in the State.

Speaking in his office at the Government House, Benin City, Edo State, the Head of Service, Mr. Anthony Okungbowa, reiterated the administration’s commitment to this vital aspect of public service. Highlighting a significant milestone achieved under the leadership of Governor Godwin Obaseki, Mr. Okungbowa emphasized the streamlining of the Pension Payment System. He elaborated on the introduction of a Contributory Pension Scheme and the implementation of a Life Assurance Policy, covering all civil and public servants. According to him, the administration has also taken measures to ensure regular and punctual payment of gratuity in Edo State.

Mr. Okungbowa acknowledged the challenges that existed in transitioning employees from the salary payroll to the pension payroll. He highlighted the rectification of this issue, indicating that retirement today results in immediate enrollment on the pension payroll, unlike the delays experienced in the past.

Furthermore, it was revealed that the National Union of Pensioners plans to honour Governor Godwin Obaseki on August 22, 2023, at the Government House in Benin City. The Governor’s recognition stems from the significant advancements his administration has made in the area of pension management.

Addressing outstanding concerns, Mr. Okungbowa pointed out Governor Obaseki’s success in addressing pension and gratuity arrears dating back to January 1, 2017. The Governor’s integration of the Civil/Public service into the Contributory Pension Scheme was lauded, a noteworthy achievement considering the financial investments required. Edo State stands among the few states that have effectively implemented this scheme.

Mr. Okungbowa further addressed the long-standing harmonization issue, confirming that the Government allocates N200 million monthly to cater for gratuities for retired pensioners. He assured the pensioners community that considerable attention has been devoted to their welfare.

While acknowledging the delay in addressing past arrears due to the inherited backlog, Mr. Okungbowa implored pensioners to be patient, as payments are disbursed in batches, noting that the Government remains resolute in fulfilling its promise to clear gratuity arrears. As evidence of this commitment, Mr. Okungbowa disclosed that gratuity payments for the months of July and August have been successfully disbursed, with September’s payments currently in progress.
