In commemoration of the year 2025 World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, the Edo State Government has organized a road walk around major streets in Benin City, to educate the public about the dangers associated with human trafficking and the importance of collective action in preventing human exploitations.

The event themed, “Human Trafficking is Organized Crime – End the Exploitation,” brought together Edo State Government’s officials and other relevant stakeholders. In her speech, the Coordinator, Office of the Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Anani stated that the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo is committed to combating human trafficking in all its forms.

She assured that the administration is working tirelessly to provide employment opportunities for youths and create an enabling environment for everyone to thrive.

Mrs. Anani added that the State Government is resolute in its stance against human trafficking, and that anyone found guilty will face the full weight of the law.

The Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development, Chief Bisi Idaomi Esq., represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Joy Ihensekhien, expressed concerns about the risks and negative outcomes associated with seeking opportunities abroad, particularly for young people who travel illegally.

She emphasized the importance of staying in the State and pursuing local opportunities, highlighting the potentials for personal growth, economic empowerment, and social development in the State.

Chief Idaomi stated that the Ministry aims to create a safe and supportive environment that promote the well-being of residents, particularly women and children who are often disproportionately affected by human trafficking.

The Director General of the Edo State Diaspora Agency, Dr. (Mrs.) Loretta Oduware Ogboro-Okor, appreciated the State Governor for championing a collaborative approach in tackling pressing issues, particularly human trafficking. She emphasized the importance for individuals to be cautious of false promises of opportunities abroad, saying the risks of exploitation that often accompany such ventures are of grave consequences.
