Edo State Govt recues violated, malnourished children, vows to protect vulnerable

By Peace Temisan Osemwegie

The Edo State Government through its Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues, has visited a year-old infant, who is allegedly suffering from extreme malnutrition, known as marasmus; with her 10-year-old stepsister, who was allegedly repeatedly defiled by her 54-year-old stepfather.

Witnesses said the mother of the children died shortly after giving birth to the baby, leaving behind the innocent children at the mercy of their father and stepfather, who is currently in police custody, as principal suspect of the heinous crime of defilement.

The Edo State Commissioner for Social Development and Gender Issues, Hon. (Barr.) Marie Olabisi Idaomi, made the disclosures while leading a delegation to visit the baby at the Modic Medical Centre in Benin City.

The Ministry’ Commissioner assured the hospital management that the State Government would cover the infant’s medical bills and urged the doctor to provide proper care to ensure the baby’s development. She also visited the Headquarters of the Edo State Police Command to follow up on the case, where she was received by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Angela Okaro and the Officer in charge of Gender, Pricilla Ndudi.

Hon. Idaomi expressed her commitment to addressing the limitations faced by the Police Department and assured them that she would convey their concerns of logistics to the State Governor. “This is no longer business as usual. I will do everything within my power to ensure that the vulnerable are protected and justice is delivered,” she stated.

Hon. Idaomi’s action demonstrates her dedication to protecting the vulnerable. Her commitments to protecting the rights and dignity of individuals is a beacon of hope for a safer and a more just Edo State.
