The Edo State Government through its Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) in collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Gender Issues, has facilitated the transfer of an alleged abused pupil, Glory Joseph, to a secured shelter in Benin City, where she is receiving medical attention and emotional support.
According to the functioning Executive Chairman of Edo SUBEB, Hon. Omonzane Ebanehita Sonia, “The news of an alleged case of Child Abuse concerning one Glory Joseph was reported by a Primary Four teacher, Mrs. Osifo Okungbowa, at Okouve Primary School, Oghede, in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State.
“The Teacher noticed a serious injury on the neck of the ten-year-old pupil, Glory Joseph. When questioned, the child explained that she was assaulted days earlier, on Sunday, May 25, by her ‘big aunty,’ identified as Mercy, and Mercy’s two daughters. The girl said they tied a headscarf around her neck and beat her in the stomach with a pestle while she was alone at home in Uholor Barracks and that the abusers fled when her Caregiver returned.
“Further revelations by the child revealed a long history of abuse. She stated that she had previously been forced to drink cement, and on another occasion, was stabbed. She had lived with her grandmother and an aunt named Blessing, after the death of her mother and submitted that the abusers often accused her of witchcraft.
“Upon receiving the report from the class Teacher, the Headmistress, Mrs. Agbonile Glory, escalated the matter by reporting to the Evbotubu Police Station and the Local Government Education Authority. The Police launched an investigation and ordered the arrest of the suspects. So far, one suspect identified as Miracle, has been apprehended and in custody of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Benin City. Efforts are ongoing to arrest the other two suspects, Mercy and Vivian, who are still at large.
Hon. Omonzane continued, “The Edo SUBEB’s Child Safeguarding and Protection Officer, Mrs. Osemwengie Isoken Betty, has been detailed on the case, ensuring that all protocols for the protection of vulnerable children are followed. She is working with the Social Welfare Authorities, the School and the Police to coordinate the necessary interventions for Glory’s immediate safety and long-term well-being.”
Edo SUBEB expressed concern over the Child’s condition and commended the School for promptly reporting the incident. The Board reiterated its commitment to child safety and pledges to continue working with relevant authorities to ensure that justice is served and that no child in the school system is subjected to abuse or neglect.
“This case is deeply troubling, and we are working closely with law enforcement agencies and the Ministry of Women Affairs to protect the child and pursue justice. Every child in our schools deserves a safe environment to learn and grow. Investigations are ongoing. Edo SUBEB and the Police continue to call on the public to provide any useful information that may lead to the arrest of the remaining suspects,” Hon. Omonzane concluded.
