The Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (Edo SUBEB) has hosted the second edition of its bi-monthly capacity-building workshop for some school support teams selected from fifteen schools in Benin City.
The Workshop which was held at the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA), is meant to equip the school support teams with necessary tools they need to manage their schools.
The bi-monthly capacity workshop is a follow-up training to a pre-research and survey exercise usually carried out to assess gaps and areas where schools are experiencing challenges in order to proffer workable remedies to such deficits which may include shortage of teachers, students’ management and other resources.
The exercise, according to the organizers, is meant to build the capacity of the school support teams to enable them to transfer knowledge to their head teachers and other school management teams for efficiency and effectiveness.
Addressing journalists during the workshop, the Capacity Workshop Manager, Mrs Marian Ifaorumhe, reiterated that the State Government is committed to ensuring every school in the state has a proper plan for effective management of resources.
Mrs Ifaorumhe added: “As change is the only constant thing in this world, hence the continuous training of the school support teams by the State Government through EdoSUBEB to ensure effective management of all schools which will in turn result in positive performance and transformation on the part of teachers and students.”
According to her, “The needs and expectations of schools motivate the training modules for every session and class held. When a proper plan is drawn, the school system will never wave.”
The workshop covered areas such as appropriate set-up of schools, implementation of instructions, ensuring proper learning mechanism for students, attendance, punctuality and key performance Indicators (KPI) management technique as well as ways to manage corporal punishments in school environment.
The trainer recommended that teacher-student relationship should be established, an enabling environment for instruction and learning be created, and called for teachers’ vigilance in overseeing students’ behaviors in the classroom as well as acknowledging students’ performance and feedback.
The training manager expressed appreciation to the State Government and the Edo State Ministry of Education for providing the tools and other requirements for the capacity building workshop since its inception.
However, she appealed to the trainees to always align with the workshop’s motivation and drive for ease in communicating instructions and lessons across to them, as that is the only challenge they have experienced thus far.
Highpoint of the workshop was a practical interactive assessment for trainees which the trainer said was aimed at ascertaining if lessons taught were understood.
