The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Sir (Dr.) Lucky Eseigbe has reiterated that Edo State Government is set to partner with relevant authorities in the fight against food poisoning, adulteration and environmental pollution in the State.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Association of Livestock Managers and Food Products Dealers of Nigeria at his office in Benin City, the Commissioner highlighted the urgent need for collaborative efforts to address the growing number of food-related health issues, including food poisoning, kidney failure and heart attacks, which have been rising across the State and the entire Country.

Sir (Dr.) Lucky Eseigbe emphasized the importance of cleanliness and safe practices, as the Government is set to partner with relevant authorities to ensure food safety for its people, while calling on the Association to work closely with the State and the eighteen Local Government Councils to ensure that markets adhere to food quality control.

He acknowledged the shortage of Environmental Health Officers and expressed the need to strengthen the workforce by increasing the number of Officers to ensure proper inspection of food processing methods in the markets.

“We must send a clear message that there will be war against food adulteration in Edo State. Those who engage in this illegal practice must know that they will face severe consequences, including the seizure and destruction of contaminated food items”. The Commissioner stated.

He also stressed that Edo will set a precedent in the fight against food adulteration, making the State a role model for the entire Nation.

The Commissioner assured the Association of the Ministry’s full support, reinforcing the State Government’s commitment to fighting food adulteration and enhancing food security through strategic partnerships.

“Edo State is ready to partner with your Association to ensure that our people have access to safe, healthy food. We will work together to create a healthier environment for all”. The Commissioner affirmed.

Sir (Dr.) Lucky Eseigbe further expressed strong support for the Federal Government’s initiative to establish a Ministry of Livestock, which will play a crucial role in advancing Edo’s agricultural and livestock sectors. He proposed the establishment of local animal farms to reduce reliance on livestock transported from other parts of the country, thereby enhancing food security and promoting sustainable practices in animal husbandry in Edo State.

Earlier, the National President, Association of Livestock Managers and Food Products Dealers of Nigeria, Hon. Steven David Edjeba, revealed that the Association had recently inaugurated a Committee dedicated to combating food poisoning, food adulteration and environmental pollution. He appealed for the State Government’s collaboration to engage with market leaders to combat foodborne illnesses effectively.
