In the wake of a recent building collapse at Idumoza Community, Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area, Edo State Government has emphasized the critical importance of obtaining proper building approvals before commencing construction projects.
The Managing Director of Edo State Development and Building Control Agency, Hon. Igabali Imoisili Darlington made this known while addressing newsmen during a press briefing held at his office in Benin City.
Hon. Igabali who disclosed that the Agency received information about the collapse of a proposed one-storey hotel building, which tragically resulted in the death of the property owner, added that an assessment visit was made to the location to ascertain the level of damage caused by the collapse.
He revealed that the Area Planning Officer of the Agency and his team had visited the site multiple times prior to the incident, served relevant notices and sealed off the site, frowning at the fact that the owner continued construction in defiance to all warnings and notices earlier served.
“The building had no approval, and despite repeated notices, construction was still ongoing.
“Our preliminary investigation found there was lack of supervision by a certified professional, and the building materials used were substandard and compromised”. Hon. Igabali stated.
He further stressed the importance of both securing approval and adhering to established standards and specifications to prevent loss of life and property.
“As an Agency, we will continue to educate the public. It’s not just about obtaining approval, it’s about building right, in line with the Edo State Master Plan and Building Code”. He added.
Hon. Igabali urged all prospective developers to consult the Agency or any Area Planning Office across Local Government Areas for proper guidance and plan approval, expressing his condolences to the family of the deceased.
