The Edo State Government has announced that a suspect has been arrested in connection to the kidnapping of 31 persons at the Igueben train station in Edo.
The Commissioner for Information, Mr Chris Nehikhare made this statement during a press conference that was held at his office in Benin on Sunday, January 8, 2023.
Nehikhare said the State Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu was at the scene of the incident on Sunday morning for an on-the-spot assessment of the security breach.
Addressing newsmen, Nehikhare said the suspect arrested is cooperating with security agents in their investigations.
“They kidnapped 32 people but luckily for us, one of them escaped.
“The Police immediately swung into action in collaboration with the Edo State Security Network and our local hunters to comb the bushes for the kidnappers and their victims.
“This morning, the State Deputy Governor visited the scene of the crime to have an on-the-spot assessment of what had happened.
“We are pleased to announce that just as we were coming for this press conference, we got a report that one of the suspects has been arrested and he is helping the security agencies with their investigation.
“We must commend the police for their swift response to this security breach, and we are pleased to say that our local hunters and vigilante network were instrumental to this operation, that is why we are recording this significant success in such a short time.” the Commissioner said.
Mr Nehikhare consoled the families of the victims, promising that the government will provide all the necessary support to the security agencies to secure the release of their loved ones.
