The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Monday, received world record holder and javelin gold medalist at the just concluded 2020 Paralympics Games in Tokyo, Flora Ugwunwa Ekurede.

Obaseki received the gold medalist at the Government House, Benin City, in company of deputy, Rt. Hon. Comr. Philip Shaibu and Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie, Esq.

The governor reassured that his administration will continue to revamp sporting facilities in the state and sustain investment in the sector so as to create opportunities for Edo youths.

He said, “We are happy to have been able to revamp the sporting facilities in Edo State, giving youths and everyone else the opportunity to be the best that you can. The facilities are there and are world-class. We encourage you to continue to train to be an inspiration to other youths, making them believe that there is ability in disability.

“The Edo State Government is interested in Edo youths as we will continue to invest in sporting facilities and provide appropriate support to bring out the best in Edo youths.”

Governor Obaseki thanked the athlete for honouring him by coming to present the gold medal to him in his office.

Commending the state government’s relentless commitment to sports development, the gold medalist noted, “My plan and aim is to break and reset another record but due to the weather in Tokyo, I didn’t break the record but won the gold in the game and am here to present it to you Mr. Governor.”
