The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has called for a rethink in human resourcing and personnel development in the nation’s health care system.
He made this call on Wednesday, 19 October, 2022, while receiving the new president of the World Medical Association, Dr. Osahon Enabulele, at the Government House, Benin City.
Obaseki, who expressed joy over the emergence of Dr. Enabulele as the new leader of a reputable global body, said that the position was a call to responsibility, especially at a time when pandemics are ravaging nations.
“Brain drain has never been higher than it is today. So here we are, cut in between a growing demand and need for health services, and losing the resources we have to the rest of the world.
“We will have to have some fresh rethink about human resourcing and personnel development for our health care system.
“There has to be another way, because the gap we need to fill is quite huge. That’s where we need to be relying on you,” the Governor said.
On his part, the President, World Medical Association, Dr. Osahon Enabulele, expressed appreciation to the Governor for his immense support during his inauguration, and sought for more partnerships with the State Government.
Enabulele said: “We are very open to drive further collaborations with the Edo State Government in various areas that were enunciated at my last visit.
“The issues of health system strengthening, which of course, is already going on; trying to drive out more actionable programs that we can use to advance quality care; and the strengthening of the health system globally, with emphasis on Africa and Nigeria.”
