Obaseki’s reforms: 55MW CCETC-Ossiomo Power Plant to be expanded to 550MW

The 55MW CCETC-Ossiomo Power Plant, recently completed in Edo State, to provide stable power to government buildings, other public utilities and local industries, is set to be expanded to a 550MW capacity gas power plant to be constructed in three phases.

The already completed integrated power plant encompasses the infrastructure for gas supply, the power plant as well as transmission and distribution infrastructure.

The Edo State Government entered into a Power Purchase Agreement with CCETC-Ossiomo Power to power public utilities and provided the needed enabling environment, which fast tracked the project, which is set for commissioning.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Crusoe Osagie, in a statement, said the project would transform the state’s power sector, allowing for the liberalization of the market from the stranglehold of just one distribution company.

According to him, “The next phase of our power project is the design and engineering phase comprising a 550MW Gas Engine IPP to be constructed in 3 phases with the 1st phase scheduled for commissioning in the last quarter of 2021.”

He said delivery of the power project is premised on the securing of three critical licenses by the company from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) comprising a Generation License, an Independent Electricity Distribution Network License and an Eligible Customer (willing buyer-willing seller) approval.

According to him, “With the arrangement, a substation has been completed at Edo State Secretariat on Sapele Road and cables are being reticulated to different key government establishments in Benin city. A line has been drawn to the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, while other commercial centres can set up clusters to buy off at least 1MW from the power company.”

He added “The transmission and distribution infrastructure include a 33KM 33KV Line, 8KM 11KV mini grid around Ologbo, 2 X 15MVA Injection Substation located at the Edo State Government Secretariat on Sapele Road and about 10KM 11KV mini grid around GRA/Ring Road, Benin City.”
