By Omoruyi Patricia Osayomore

In a time when political promises often fade into obscurity, the Edo State Governor, Sen. Monday Okpebholo shines brightly as a rare example of integrity, empathy, and genuine commitment to the welfare of his people.

His recent initiatives are not merely commendable, they signal a bold reminiscence of genuine leadership; one that places citizens’ needs at the heart of governance. In a landmark move to boost employees’ morale, Sen. Okpebholo recently approved the promotion of junior cadre workers on salary grade levels 03 and 04, ensuring that career advancement is truly prompt, based on merit and dedication.

Across key sectors, he has consistently created employment opportunities, ensuring that no group is left behind. His decision to grant pensionable employment to hitherto casual workers, including cleaners, by officially assigning them to various ministries, departments, and agencies, reflects a progressive commitment to inclusive governance, economic sustainability, and meaningful workforce engagement.

One of the hallmarks of his administration is the prompt payment of salaries. While many state governments across Nigeria struggle with salary arrears, Sen. Okpebholo’s fiscal discipline has enabled the timely payment of workers’ salaries and pension. Notably, in April 2025, he ensured all pensioners and Edo workers received their wages early to facilitate their celebration of Easter, a central pillar of Christianity. The thoughtful gesture boosted morale, reaffirmed his administration’s appreciation for the workforce, and injected renewed confidence into the public service sector.

Sen. Okpebholo has also made remarkable strides in improving the lives of senior citizens. He increased pension allocations from N50 million to N1 billion for the State and the Local Government’s pensioners, to ensure prompt and dignified disbursements. The compassionate action has brought relief to thousands of families and restored honour to retirees, who spent their lives in the service to the State. In a further display of strategic leadership, the Governor established a committee to review the compulsory pension scheme, responding to the long-standing concerns of stakeholders. The initiative reflects a sincere commitment to reforming outdated systems and fostering a fairer, more sustainable pension administration.

The Education Sector has also witnessed significant investments under Sen. Okpebholo’s stewardship. By increasing subvention to the State-owned Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, from N41 million to N500 million, thereby making a clear investment in Edo State’s future. The funding boost aims to improve infrastructure, support academic research, and make higher education more accessible to the average Edo person. The promotion of relevant and quality education demonstrates that his administration values knowledge, innovation, and the transformative power of education.

Moreover, in a bid to foster greater development partnerships, Sen. Okpebholo recently sought a collaboration with the Edo State Branch Comptroller of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Apanke Utande. The partnership initiative seeks to enhance the economic well-being of Edo citizens and further solidify the State’s path toward sustainable economic development.

Sen. Okpebholo is proving that governance can indeed be compassionate and effective. His proactive leadership is a breath of fresh air, and the people of Edo State are witnessing, in real-time, the transformative power of a leader who listens, understands, and delivers.

As the “Renewed Hope” administration of Sen. Okpebholo continues to chart a new course in Edo State, it sets a gold standard for leadership, not just within Nigeria, but across the Continent of Africa.
