The Executive Chairman of Oredo Local Government Area (LGA), Dr. Tom Obaseki, has unveiled plans for market women in the LGA to procure insurance coverage in order to indemnify them against losses in the case of eventualities.

Speaking while playing host to the Edo State Market Women Association during a courtesy visit at the Council Secretariat in Benin City, Dr. Obaseki charged them on the cleanliness of markets which is a top priority of his administration.

In his welcome speech, Dr. Obaseki expressed gratitude to the Market Women Association for their support during the recent election, where he emerged the Executive Chairman of the Council. He solicited for the Association’s continued support for his administration, emphasizing that their collaboration is essential for the overall progress of Local Government.

The Council Boss promised to address the issue of restroom facilities in various markets in the LGA. He announced that the revitalization and renovation of the Oba Market will be his first priority, saying all preparations were in place for the commencement of the project. Dr. Obaseki also disclosed that by October 31st, 2023, the Edo State Government will install a signboard for Agbado Market, adding that the renovation of the Yanga Market will be initiated during the dry season.

Earlier, the President of the Edo State Market Women, Madame Blackie Ogiamien, who spoke on behalf of the Association, congratulated the Chairman on his successful victory in the recently held local government elections. She assured the Council Boss of her Association’s support for the current administration and its initiatives.

Madame Ogiamien requested the Chairman to set up a market verification committee, which will be responsible for registering and keeping track of the number of traders and stores in the markets.
