Perm Sec. Engages Staff, Harps on Professionalism, Performance Appraisal for Rewards

By Violet Osatohanmwen Obamwonyi

In a call for renewed dedication and professionalism at work, the Permanent Secretary (PS) of the Edo State Ministry of Communication and Orientation, Dr. Desmond Agbama, has urged staff members to redouble their commitments to work, emphasizing that the current administration in the State is resolute in its approach to performance evaluation, punctuality, and discipline.

The Permanent Secretary made the call during a staff engagement session held 20th January, 2025 at the Ministry’s Conference Hall in Benin City. He underscored that achieving set goals requires synergy, discipline, and a shared commitment to excellence, calling on all staff to align themselves with the set objectives, work collaboratively with the various heads of departments, and ensure optimal productivity.

While emphasising that the timely payment of salaries by the State Government must be justified through diligence and commitment to duty, he reiterated the importance of punctuality and discipline at work. He cautioned that absenteeism, lateness to work, and insubordination would not be condoned, but would attract severe consequences. He charged senior officers to lead by example, noting that their conduct would set the tone for right behaviour among junior employees.

“This is a new administration, and we have been strongly advised not to condone any form of indiscipline among staff. I urge everyone to rededicate self to work; give your best, and uphold professional ethics. There will be no room for nonchalance. Approval for training will not be a freebie. It will be subject to the impact you have made in the Ministry, and not driven by nepotism or favoritism,” Dr. Agbama stated.

In line with global best practices, Dr. Agbama affirmed that the Annual Performance Evaluation Report (APER) would be strictly adhered to, emphasizing the need for staff to put their best foot forward as according to him, promotions and career advancements would be merit-based; ensuring that only those who demonstrate competence, dedication, and a strong work ethic would be recognized and duly rewarded.

Dr. Agbama acknowledged the divine providence of God, which according to him, enabled all employees to transition safely into 2025.
