The Edo State Secondary Education Board (SSEB) Chairman, Miss Omonzane Ebanehita Sonia has officially flagged off the semi-final stage of the year 2025 edition of the Governor’s Cup with a symbolic ball kick at the Western Boys High School mini stadium.
The semi-finals witnessed thrilling encounters, showcasing talents of young athletes from various secondary schools across the State. Idia College girls dominated the female category; defeating Umagbae Grammar School girls 6 – 0. The impressive win sets the stage for the Idia College girls’ next challenge.
In the male category, Ogbe Secondary School boys emerged victorious, defeating Saint David Model College boys 2 – 1. The match was intense, with both teams displaying remarkable skills and determination to the admiration of spectators.
In the upcoming matches scheduled for 20th May, 2025, the Saint Angela Girl’s Grammar School will slug it out with the Eguare Secondary School girls, and the St. Peter’s Grammar School boys will lock horns with the Agba Grammar School boys.
The winners of the scheduled matches will feature against the Idia College girls in the female category and the Ogbe Secondary School boys in the male category on 27th May, 2025 (Children’s Day) at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.
Miss Omonzane’s presence at the flag-off ceremony underscores the Board’s commitment to promoting sports development in the State. The Governor’s Cup aims to identify and nurture young talents, aligning with the Catch Them Young programme initiated by the Governor, Sen. Monday Okpebholo’s administration.
The Chairman of SSEB asserted that as the tournament progresses, fans should expect more electrifying matches, outstanding performances, and the emergence of new champions.
The Board Chairman was accompanied by some Board members, including Alhaji Yusuf Bako, and Princess Charity Iziengbe Osifo. Others are the Administrative Secretary of the Board, Mr. Osawe Osagie; the Director of Schools Services, Mrs. Mabel Oboigba, and the Director of Social Mobilisation, Mrs. Mabel Ojiefoh.
