The Executive Chairman of the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Barr. (Mrs.) Onomen Briggs, has visited some schools in the State, in commemoration of the year 2025 International Day of Education.
According to the SUBEB Boss, the visit was part of efforts to assess the state of education and to celebrate the year’s theme, “AI and Education.” She was accompanied by the Director of School Support Services, Mr. Augustine Otas Osegbe and other staff members from the Department.
At Family Support Primary School in Oredo Local Government Area (LGA), Mrs. Briggs with her Team was conducted on a tour of the school by the Headmistress, Mrs. Ajibade Mercy. During the tour, the Chairman recognized and awarded cash prizes to four outstanding Primary three pupils including Ngo Honest, Maro Roy, Blessing Anthony, and Winner Igouba, for their excellence in answering questions.
The Team also visited St. Maria Goretti Junior Secondary School in Ikpoba-Okha LGA, where the Chairman with her Team toured the school’s facilities as guided by the Principal, Mrs. Unuarheme Dora, represented by the Vice Principal, Mrs. Ehiaguina Felicia. It afforded the SUBEB Team to interact with pupils and observed classroom teaching and learning activities.
Mrs. Briggs commended a teacher, Mr. Omoahuana Charlie, a person with disabilities (PWD), for his commitment and dedication to duty. She praised his resilience and encouraged him to continue serving as a role model in the education sector.
In an interview, the SUBEB Chairman said, “Today is the International Day of Education, and I thought it would be meaningful to celebrate this day by visiting some schools. The theme for this year, ‘AI and Education,’ aligns with our efforts to integrate technology and artificial intelligence into our schools. My assessment shows there is much work to be done, but I commend our teachers for their dedication and efforts so far. We will continue to make improvements where necessary,” she stated
Mrs. Briggs reiterated the commitment of the State Governor, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, to inclusive education in the State. She highlighted the Governor’s concerns to include ensuring access to quality education for every child while creating opportunities for teachers, including persons with disabilities (PWDs), to thrive under his administration.
She appreciated the Old Girls’ Association of St. Maria Goretti for their contributions, particularly the donation of some buildings to the school. “The Government and every Edo child value your generosity and dedication to improving education,” she said.
The visits underscored the Edo State Government’s commitment to advancing education, fostering inclusivity, and equipping both students and teachers for success in a rapidly evolving world. The SUBEB Boss’ gesture was aimed at encouraging academic excellence among pupils.
