  5. The Gains Of Obaseki’s Investment In Technical Education

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki is unrelenting in his prioritizing of technical education as part of the Making Edo Great Again (MEGA) agenda to radically transform the economy of the state.

The strength of technical education in our world today cannot be over emphasized as it prepares students for the industrialised world.

While technical education has helped in societal development, creating appropriate skills, abilities and competencies necessary for individuals to live in and adapt to real work situations, it has also helped to reduce unemployment rate in the country.

The vision and commitment of the Edo State Government towards transforming technical education in the state has drastically reduced unemployment rate as more Edo youths are now delving into entrepreneurship.

The Obaseki administration is revamping the Government Science and Technical College (GSTC), Benin, formerly known as Benin Technical College to serve as a template for how other technical colleges in the state will be revamped, a government source familiar with the development said.

GSTC when completed will admit about 3,500 students, and when combined with the evening section, it will be able to train up to 5,000 students on technical subjects yearly.

Students now have the opportunity to be trained on different technical skills as the college is designed with 10 workshops and laboratories for automobile engineering, electrical engineering, carpentry and plumbing, amongst others.

The Governor has also commenced plans to revamp the technical school at Irrua and upgrade the vocational school in Uzebba to a technical college.

These projects are currently in the works including other proposed technical schools in the state. It is obvious that Governor Obaseki is set to take Edo to new heights, restoring Edo residents’ dignity and improving their well being through education.
