By Portia Osayande

In preparation for the upcoming World Blood Donor Day, the Edo State Ministry of Health has announced its collaboration with esteemed partners including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Blood Service Commission (NBSC) for an intensive voluntary blood donation campaign. The series of events, scheduled to begin on June 14th, 2023, aims to raise awareness about the crucial need for blood donations and recognize the heroic contributions of voluntary non-remunerated blood donors.

Speaking at a press briefing held on Tuesday, June 13th, 2023, the Permanent Secretary of the Edo State Ministry of Health, Dr. Stanley Ehiarimwian, expressed gratitude to the selfless individuals who have donated blood over the years, emphasizing the countless lives that have been saved through their generous contributions. Dr. Ehiarimwian highlighted the significance of World Blood Donor Day as a platform to acknowledge and appreciate these invaluable donors.

World Blood Donor Day, observed annually on June 14th, serves as a global initiative to raise awareness about the importance of blood donation and recognize the selfless act of voluntary donors. This year’s theme, ‘We Live Because You Give,’ underscores the life-saving impact of blood donation, emphasizing the continuous need for a safe and sustainable blood supply. The slogan “Give Blood, Give Plasma, Share Life, Share Often” encourages individuals to contribute to the creation of a healthier community by selflessly donating blood and plasma.

The demand for blood transfusions remains high, as they are essential for supporting critical medical interventions in patients suffering from severe anemia, traumatic injuries, complications during childbirth, and other medical emergencies. However, the available blood supply often falls short of meeting the demand, leading to potential suffering and loss of lives. In light of this, the Edo State Ministry of Health, in partnership with WHO, NBSC, and other stakeholders, is intensifying efforts to expand and strengthen blood donation programs.

As part of the World Blood Donor Day activities, the Edo State Ministry of Health has planned a series of events spread over two days. On June 13th, preliminary activities, including a press briefing, commenced at the Ministry’s premises with Voluntary blood donation at the NBSC Benin Zonal Headquarters, followed by a seminar at the School of Health Technology, Benin, emphasizing the importance of blood donation and its life-saving impact.

The main event on June 14th will begin with a roadshow and awareness campaign aimed at engaging the public and increasing awareness about blood donation. This will be followed by a Donor Appreciation Ceremony, which will take place at the Bishop Kelly Pastoral Center on Airport Road, Benin City. The ceremony will honor the selfless individuals who have donated blood to save lives. Additionally, voluntary blood donation will be facilitated at the same location and at the NBSC Benin Zonal Headquarters.

On June 15th, a Health Fair will be hosted by the Ministry of Health at the Secretariat Complex in Benin City. The fair will feature interactive health booths, seminars, blood donation, and free health screenings, providing an opportunity for participants to learn more about maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The Edo State Ministry of Health, in line with government’s commitment to the well-being of its citizens, will donate all pints of blood collected during the program to three health facilities. This initiative aims to ensure that individuals requiring blood transfusion receive the necessary support during this period. The target for this year’s campaign is a minimum of 100 pints of blood.

The Edo State Ministry of Health extends an invitation to eligible citizens aged 18 to 65, weighing 50kg and above, to actively participate in the voluntary blood donation campaign during the World Blood Donor Day celebration. The Ministry encourages individuals to consider becoming regular blood donors or supporting the cause through blood donation supplies. By doing so, they can make a profound difference in their community and provide renewed hope and a second chance at life for those in need.

The Permanent Secretary further urged members of the public to join the activities scheduled for the 2023 World Blood Donor Day, adding that their valued contributions will go a long way in saving lives.
