In its firm opposition to dangerous and unlawful migration routes, the Edo State Government, through the Office of the First Lady, has again advocated for safe and regular migration pathways.
Thie position was articulated by the Coordinator of the Office of the Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, during a meeting with delegates from the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Edo State Command, which held at the Government House in Benin City.
Emphasizing the urgent need to protect young people from life-threatening journeys across deserts and seas, the Coordinator called for the removal of systemic obstacles that drive irregular migration. She urged the visiting officers to promote programmes which are focused on legal migration pathways to ensure that children and youth are aware that lawful travel abroad is possible. She recommended that the severe consequences associated with illegal migration should be emphasised.
Addressing the State Government’s commitment to strengthening institutional collaboration, Mrs. Anani confirmed that two of the three requests for a vehicle and a piece of land by the NIS, have been fulfilled. She disclosed that the establishment of an NIS liaison office within the Government House was pending due to space constraints, but added that the Governor, Sen. Monday Okpebholo has directed that suitable space be identified to accommodate the Service.
The Coordinator commended the NIS for its commendable work, noting significant improvements in the passport issuance process under the current administration, which has become notably more seamless compared to previous years. She encouraged stakeholders to consolidate the achievements and maintain an efficient and accessible system to eliminate barriers for citizens seeking legitimate travel opportunities.
On behalf of the delegates, the Comptroller of NIS, Edo State Command, Mr. Steve Okezie Ibeabuchi, appreciated Mrs. Anani for her continued support. He assured her of their unwavering loyalty and commitment to enhanced collaboration. He submitted that their support is a duty bound by responsibility rather than choice. He pledged to work tirelessly to ensure that processes remain seamless and effective.
