Edo First Lady Pushes for Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture

To boost food security and agricultural growth, while simultaneously empowering women, the Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, Mrs. Edesili Okpebholo Anani, stressed the need for women’s inclusion in agricultural programmes.

This call to action was made during a meeting with representatives from the LIFE-ND at the Office of the First Lady, Government House, Benin City.

Mrs. Anani emphasized the importance of ensuring food security and promoting agricultural development, stating, ‘We are here to ensure there is food security. Agriculture is one of the projects that the Governor has decided to prioritize in this administration. We want to ensure there is food security, there is employment, economic growth as well as financial security.’

She also highlighted the crucial role women play in the economy, citing their various strengths and qualities. ‘Women are the backbone of the economy. We are strong, we are reliable, we are hardworking, we are achievers.

Commenting on LIFE-ND’s project, Mrs. Anani said ‘In your project, our women and youths need to be carried along and that is why we are here.’

To ensure the sustainability of the project, Mrs. Anani advised that modalities be put in place, including mentors to guide participants and measures to assess their impact on others.

In his remarks, the Project Coordinator of LIFE-ND, Mr. John Omoruyi, expressed gratitude for the Government’s support. He noted that Governor Monday Okpebholo allocated 1.6 billion for LIFE-ND Plus in the 2025 budget.

Mr. Omoruyi also detailed the project’s scope, stating it will encompass 100 communities and 10 local governments within the State. He underscored the importance of profiling women in the community, deeming it crucial for the project’s success.
Specifically, he noted that women’s involvement is essential to achieving the project’s broad objectives and promoting economic growth.
